Watchdog Scrutinises Contractors for Corruption Risk

Private firms working with the government are now facing increased scrutiny as the national anti-corruption watchdog raises concerns about the profit-driven nature of consultants and contractors. While many of these firms focus on improving efficiency and outcomes, there is growing concern that this may come at the expense of ethical standards, particularly in procurement where commercial interests can conflict with public service priorities.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), which was established in July 2023, is currently reviewing about 10% of the 5,400 referrals it has received so far. Although only 1% of these cases raise concerns about serious or systemic corruption, the broad scope of the Commission’s oversight combined with its enforcement powers points to a clear effort to clamp down on questionable practices involving public funds.

Out of nearly 100 corruption investigations launched so far, consultants and external advisers hired by government agencies are under particular scrutiny. The watchdog has confirmed that anti-corruption laws apply not only to public servants but also to individuals or companies providing services under a government contract. This includes private professionals such as lawyers and management consultants who work directly or indirectly with Commonwealth agencies.

This development may change the way private firms engage with government clients. While the goal is to reduce the risk of misconduct like cronyism, data misuse or inflated billing, some industries that depend on government work are concerned about the impact. The emphasis on procurement and ethical decision-making indicates that greater compliance measures and policy changes are likely, especially as the Commission continues to oversee more than 40 active investigations within the public sector.
