SOUTH KOREA IS RATIONING FUEL. THEY SUPPLY A THIRD OF AUSTRALIA’S DIESEL

South Korea has launched emergency energy-saving measures including limiting car use, encouraging bicycles and restricting washing machines and vacuum cleaners to weekends only. The country's president said the government would respond "with utmost urgency."
29% of Australia's diesel imports and 23% of its petrol come from South Korea.
That makes this a direct supply chain problem for Australia, especially as our own government is yet to outline any equivalent plan. South Korea imports roughly 70% of its crude through the Strait of Hormuz and holds less than two months of reserves at current consumption.
They've even committed to restarting 5 nuclear reactors by May and that should probably concern us more than it seems to.

AUSTRALIANSUPER IS HIKING INSURANCE PREMIUMS BY UP TO 40%

Nearly 1.7 million Australians will see their super insurance premiums jump from June when AustralianSuper, the country's largest superfund at $410 billion, passes on cost increases it says are driven by a surge in mental health and disability claims from younger members unable to return to work.
Total and permanent disability cover up 40%. Income protection up 38%. Death cover up 20%.
Mental health claims across the life insurance sector doubled from $1.2 billion in 2019 to $2.4 billion by 2024. In 2024 alone, insurers received over 21,000 TPD claims for mental health through super funds - roughly 1 in every 3. The industry body says a growing number of younger Australians are becoming permanently unable to work due to mental health conditions, and the trend isn't slowing.
For context, a 45-year-old white-collar worker will now pay $236 a year for basic cover. A blue-collar worker the same age pays $526. AustralianSuper says even with the hike, premiums are still cheaper than they were in 2022 after 3 years of cuts.
