AUSSIE PICK

Running on empty

There are estimates that the average Australian household will cop more than $2,000 in extra annual costs when rate rises, energy bills and health insurance premiums all land on the same day. The March rate hike alone adds roughly $120 a month to repayments on a $736,000 mortgage. Health insurance premiums are expected to jump an average of 4.41% - the steepest rise in 7 years. Groceries have also overtaken energy as the most stressful expense for the first time.

Relief for drivers as rideshare giants raise prices amid fuel supply concerns

Uber will lift fares across Australia from next week, increasing driver earnings by an average of 6% and the surcharge won't be temporary. DiDi has added a 5-cent-per-kilometre fuel surcharge to every trip nationally. DoorDash is offering cash support to delivery workers covering more than 100km a week, running through to 30 April.

Fuel prices are surging as the Middle East conflict chokes supply through the Strait of Hormuz. Six oil shipments to Australia have already been cancelled or postponed. For gig workers who have to pay for their own fuel costs, the squeeze is immediate but for those of us using UberOne, it was always a matter of when, not if.

DiDi at least labelled its increase as temporary while Uber has outright stated that this isn’t a temporary surcharge for their platform but rather a fare update, built into the platform’s permanent pricing structure.
