Melbourne Winery Opens in Historic CBD Building

A new winery is set to open in Melbourne’s CBD next month, bringing a unique dining and wine-tasting experience to the city. The location, situated on the ground floor of a heritage building, also houses community organisations, including Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, creating an unusual contrast.
The upcoming venue spans 660 square metres at 247 Flinders Lane and is the latest project from a well-known hospitality group behind several Melbourne restaurants. The lease agreement for the site was negotiated 5 years ago with the non-profit organisation that owns the building, highlighting a long-term commitment to the space.
A $3 million investment has transformed the ground floor into a winery-focused venue, complete with a 150-square-metre cellar door, a restaurant, and features such as a commercial kitchen, wine storage, and dining areas that can be adjusted for different group sizes. The renovation also included installing power infrastructure and climate control systems suitable for the historic building, originally constructed in 1899.
While the venue promotes itself as a working winery, the wines under its own label will be produced offsite by a regional winery. Visitors will still have an immersive experience with elements like a basket press and grape-crushing activities to engage them in the winemaking process. Corporate events are also expected to play a significant role in the business.
With Melbourne's CBD slowly recovering from the financial impact of lockdowns and economic challenges, the venture banks on an uptick in consumer spending and a return of office workers to the area. If successful, it could contribute to revitalising the city’s hospitality scene while introducing a fresh wine-focused dining concept.
