TRIVIA

Three switches, three bulbs, one chance—can you light the way to the answer?

You are in a room with three light switches. Each switch controls one of three light bulbs in another room. You can turn the switches on and off and leave them in any position. You can go into the room with the bulbs only once. How can you figure out which switch controls which bulb?

ANSWER

Turn on the first switch and leave it on for a few minutes. This will cause the corresponding bulb to heat up. Turn off the first switch, then turn on the second switch and leave it on. Leave the third switch off.

Now go into the room with the bulbs:
- The bulb that is on is controlled by the second switch (the one you left on).
- The bulb that is off but warm is controlled by the first switch (the one you turned on first and then off).
- The bulb that is off and cool is controlled by the third switch (the one you never turned on).
