The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) warns of the risk of "data poisoning," where AI systems trained on unreliable information may lead to compromised research outcomes. This warning comes as universities across the country adopt inconsistent policies related to AI.


Australian universities are struggling to manage the rapid integration of generative AI in research settings. TEQSA's latest guidance points to a lack of uniformity, with some institutions banning AI tools during exams and others introducing oral assessments to verify that students fully understand their work. Despite these concerns, many researchers continue to use AI to improve efficiency.


According to TEQSA, the risks of AI extend beyond flawed data. There are also concerns about copyright infringement and potential exposure of sensitive materials to cybersecurity threats. While the agency stops short of mandating oral exams, it strongly recommends additional forms of assessment, particularly in postgraduate research, to uphold academic integrity. Some universities like Monash have completely banned AI in thesis submissions. Others, such as the University of Southern Queensland, require oral defences.


These changes are unfolding as the Australian Research Council (ARC) delays its long-anticipated update on the $1 billion National Competitive Grants Program. Initially expected in June, the findings have been postponed by three months due to more than 340 public submissions. Meanwhile, updated policies from national research institutions have not kept pace with new evidence suggesting that AI systems may generate false or misleading information.


The rapid adoption of AI in academia appears to be moving faster than regulatory oversight. Without clear and consistent rules, researchers could face legal or ethical issues, particularly as AI technologies become more advanced and capable of producing deceptive results. Universities may need to find a better balance between encouraging innovation and maintaining academic standards.
