Good morning. There's a new 2026 trend in town and it's one we can get around (or need).

It's called 'Admin night'. Instead of going out, you gather some friends at a house, order some takeaways and get all your life admin done together. Book your dentist, cancel your 10 subscriptions and pay your overdue invoices.

The calibration setting on my scale has been changed. As a result, all of the weight measurements are off by a consistent amount. When I place box A on the scale, it reads 170kg. When I place box B on the scale, it reads 130kg. When I place both boxes on the scale at the same time, it reads 292kg. By how much should my scale be adjusted?

ANSWER

The scale should be adjusted by -8 kilograms. This means box A really weighs 162 kilograms, while box B really weighs 122 kilograms. The information in the question can be expressed by the below equation, with c = the calibration error (the amount the scale is off by: which we want to determine)
170 + c + 130 + c = 292 + c
2c + 300 = 292 + c
c = -8

This means we must calibrate the scale by minus 8 kilograms.
